Mount Yale: Southwest Slopes

Trip Details

Elevation: 14,196 Feet

Elevation Gain: 4,300 Feet

Distance: 9.5 Miles

Gear: Ice ax, microspikes

After climbing Mount Belford yesterday, we woke up at 1:00 am (again) and drove back to the Sawatch Range to climb Mount Yale. We made it to the trailhead around 4:30 and started hiking shortly thereafter.

Luckily the snow was much firmer than it was on Mount Belford. We were able to hike up to treeline without any postholing. From there, we put on our microspikes and scrambled up to the ridge. The steeper snow slope to the summit was also very firm and was in excellent condition for climbing. Unlike yesterday, the wind was very calm. There was only a slight breeze along the ridge and at the summit.

Well that wraps up another week of training. Bolivia is coming up fast our flight leaves in less than 3 weeks…
